What is a virtual server?

A virtual server is a small slice of a larger server — often called a cloud server or VPS. A VPS behaves like a small computer that’s always on and reachable, and thanks to a static, public IP address you can host all sorts of things on it. VPSs are often used to host a small website, a game server, or a VPN server and are generally ideal for small to medium projects.

Which operating systems are available?

You can auto-install Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, Rocky, Windows Server, and VyOS from the control panel. You can also install any OS of your choice by uploading the installer. Customers are welcome to suggest additions to the auto-install catalog in consultation with our team.

Can I host a WordPress site on a VPS?

Yes — you can host a WordPress site on a VPS from Spaug. Note that it may require technical know-how that not everyone has time for; we point such clients to our managed web hosting.

Can I host my website on a VPS?

Accepted Answer

Yes — you can host all kinds of sites and web apps on a Spaug VPS. However, it can require technical knowledge; we recommend our web hosting for clients who want to host their site but have little technical expertise in that area.

How can I pay?

You can pay with Visa or MasterCard credit/debit cards. Clients with an Icelandic ID number can choose to receive an invoice to online banking on each service due date.

Can I migrate from another host to Spaug?

Yes — you can do it yourself with tools like SFTP or RSYNC. Spaugur can also assist and provide data-transfer services per Spaugur Data Solutions’ price list.

Can I get additional IP addresses?

Accepted Answer

Yes — you can add extra IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to a VPS from Spaugur Data Solutions. IPv4 addresses are billed at 500 ISK/month per extra address. An IPv6 /64 block is included with each VPS, and additional /64 blocks are available for 100 ISK/month. Clients may also use their own IPv4 and/or IPv6 ranges on their VPSs via BGP or BYOIP.

Can I host a mail server?

Accepted Answer

You can host a mail server that receives mail without restrictions. If you want to send emails from a mail server hosted on our VPS, you must request that we enable it. The request should explain the purpose of the messages. We generally recommend using a sending service like AWS SES, Postmark, Resend, SendGrid, or similar to send mail.
